Over time that combination corrodes fins, insulates coils, and forces the compressor to run longer cycles just to hold a comfortable indoor temperature.

Change Your Filters on a Coastal Schedule
The single most effective thing you can do is replace the air filter regularly. In a humid climate the filter traps more moisture and particulate matter, which restricts airflow sooner than the packaging suggests.

Salt residue is the bigger coastal issue. A gentle hose rinse of the outdoor coils once a month helps wash away salt deposits before they bake on. Avoid pressure washers, which bend the delicate aluminum fins. If fins are already matted, a technician can comb them straight during a tune-up.
Watch the Drain Line
Air conditioners pull gallons of water out of Virginia Beach air every day. That condensate flows out through a drain line that can clog with algae and debris.
